Position: Assistant Professor
Professor LEI, Assistant Professor of the School of Design at Southern University of Science and Technology, is a researcher and filmmaker focusing on the topics of media, technology, and the impact of new technologies on Chinese society. LEI received her B.A. degree in Comparative Literature at Brandeis University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in East Asian Studies at Princeton University. She also completed a Master's course in Cinematic Arts at Art-on-the-run Film School in Berlin, Germany. Before joining SUSTech, she has taught in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her latest feature-length documentary has been final-listed by Sundance Documentary Fund (USA) and has won awards and fellowship by Visions du Réel (Switzerland) and Robert-Bosch Stiftung (Germany). By combining academic research and documentary filmmaking, she hopes to be part of the rise of a new generation of Chinese scholars and filmmakers who conduct innovative research on media, technology, and society in contemporary China. Committed to the ideas of media-based research and research-based media, she considers it her long-term goal to showcase this new line of research in media formats, and as a filmmaker to document China in changing times.
