Lecture Abstract
The Italian Design Day in the World (IDD), promoted annually by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Culture, celebrates Italian design and creativity on a global stage. The 2026 theme, Re-Design: Regenerating Spaces, Objects, Ideas, and Relations, focuses on the transformative potential of reuse and regeneration in architecture, urban environments, and industrial design.
This lecture explores how contemporary design practices address the challenge of reimagining what already exists, with the aim of improving quality of life in cities and communities. Particular attention is given to the Italian approach to design—often described as the “Italian Touch”—which combines craftsmanship, technological research, experimentation with new materials, and a strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability.
Through examples of circular design processes and innovative reuse of materials, the presentation highlights the role of designers and manufacturers in developing supply chains grounded in the principles of the circular economy. By regenerating spaces and objects while rethinking relationships between people, materials, and environments, Italian design offers meaningful perspectives on how to shape more sustainable and livable futures.
