02 Instructor

Enza Migliore

Assistant Professor

SUSTech School of Design

Enza Migliore is a design researcher, practitioner, and educator who focuses on exploring materials through interdisciplinary collaboration and experimental methods. She is currently an Assistant Professor at SUSTech School of Design. Enza earned her Ph.D. in Design and Innovation from the Second University of Naples and completed a Post-Doc at the Metropolitan University of Tokyo, which was funded by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science. She works at the intersection of design, science, and art, using mediums such as tangible objects, digital technologies, and speculative design practices. Her research outcomes include academic publications and exhibitions, and she aims to bring systemic knowledge, creative practices, and opportunities to scientific laboratories through design.

03 Contents and Learning Outcomes

This course introduces the practice and techniques of asynchronous, non-chronological, and speculative design approaches. Students will learn to use online platforms and digital tools like AI to create new design concepts and scenarios for international communities. Students will probe their understanding and awareness of design to understand, anticipate, and interpret trends over different times and in other places. They will select an emerging innovation in technology or materials and enhance it with digital technologies to envision its future applications through speculative design. Later, they will assess the feasibility of their proposal and create a realistic design plan and charismatic narrative for their proposal. The course combines offline and remote work, international collaborations, and digital and physical practices in an innovative and experimental modality.

04 Enrolment and Eligibility

This course is open to students from around China to create a more cross-cultural and asynchronous value to the teaching experience. It is conducted in a mixed modality, online and offline, based on their possibilities, with mandatory attendance (online or offline) after enrolment. Students from SUSTech School of Design must attend all in-class sessions. The official enrolment should be decided after WEEK 3 (September 24). The number of seats for non-SUSTech students is limited, and priority is given based on the chronological order of applications and suitability of the design background. The course starts on Tuesday 5th and will run for 16 weeks until December 24th.

Skills: speculative design, design with AI, digital design tools, co-design, teamwork design

05 At the end of this course, students will be able to

1. Create a meaningful design concept and scenario for the future

2. Outline a feasible design plan and implement the concept for an international community

3. Use online platforms and digital tools for synchronous, asychronous, and non-chronological design teamwork

4. Demonstrate creativity in translating innovation into desirable future opportunities
