On June 29, 2023, the 2023 World Industrial Design Day & Chinese-Foreign Design Leaders Summit grandly opened at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning. The School of Design and Innovation of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, hereinafter referred to as the "School of Design") showcased its important scientific research achievements and outstanding course works at the "Star" Link Exhibition Area of the World Industrial Design Day, contributing to the success of this grand event.
The 2023 World Industrial Design Day & Chinese-Foreign Design Leaders Summit was hosted by the Shenzhen Industrial Design Association (SIDA). With the goals of "high perspective", "high standard" and "high empowerment", and taking the important development achievements of Shenzhen, the "City of Design", as a window, it demonstrated the two-way empowerment between Chinese industrial design and global industrial design. The summit built an interstellar dialogue platform through three thematic sections, and joined hands with Chinese and foreign industrial design experts to convey the voice of industrial design to the world, jointly discuss the challenges facing the new landscape of the design industry, and address the questions of the times.

The Chinese-Foreign Design Leaders Summit specially invited a lineup of distinguished guests to deliver wonderful speeches, including: Masayuki Kurokawa, a national treasure-level cross-border design master from Japan, David Kusuma, President of the World Design Organization (WDO); Zhao Xinli, Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Senior Consultant of the China Science and Technology Policy Research Center of Tsinghua University, and Executive Director of Silk Road Innovation; Paul Priestman, Director and Creative Director of PriestmanGoode, Global Creative Director of CRRC Sifang Co., Ltd., and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art; Srinivasan, Chief Operating Officer of Shanghai Institute of Design and Innovation, Senator and Former President of the World Design Organization, Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and Professor at Tongji University; Pan Changxing, Deputy General Manager of Icona Design; Gao Feng, Director of the Terminal Product Design Center and Design Director of ZTE Corporation; Liu Haoran, General Manager of OPPO Industrial Design Center; Rao Rui, Director of the Design Center and Brand Center of Tencent User Research and Experience Design Department; Liang Guoju, Deputy General Manager of the Digital Intelligence Center of 3nod Group.
In the "Interstellar Dialogue" session, Dean Guan Daowen of the School of Design held a dialogue on the theme of "Design Driving Force - New Fashion Consumption Led by Design Innovation" with a group of design experts, including Xin Xiangyang (Founder of XXY Innovation), Andrea Ponti (Founder of Hong Kong Ponti Design), Frederick Gooris (Founder and Creative Director of Hong Kong Gooris Ltd), Shi Xiaoxi (Juror of the G-Mark Design Award and Head of the Chinese Jury Panel), and Sun Lei (Chief Designer of FIYTA Precision Technology Co., Ltd.). From different design perspectives, they discussed the prospects of sustainable development in design, the new fashion consumption led by design innovation, and analyzed the current and future opportunities and challenges of the design industry amid the rapid development of high technology, striving to contribute "Chinese strength" to the global economic recovery and high-quality development.
Dean Guan Daowen Engages in Dialogue with Many Design Experts
At the "Star" Link Exhibition Area of this World Industrial Design Day, the School of Design comprehensively demonstrated its educational philosophy and school-running orientation from four dimensions: "School Overview", "Faculty Team", "Scientific Research Achievements" and "Teaching Achievements". The school highlights the design-driven innovation concept of "Design + Technology", emphasizes "Design for Good" and sustainable development, and is committed to building a system integrating discipline integration, science-education integration and industry-education integration. In the scientific research section, the exhibition showcased the achievements of the School of Design’s faculty team in vertical scientific research projects, patent approvals, publication of works and papers, and artworks and exhibitions. This includes the research results of Assistant Professors Zhu Shengyu, An Pengcheng and Luo Tao in virtual reality immersive experience, mobile augmented reality brain-computer games, and interactive language design.

The School of Design also exhibited outstanding undergraduate courses, student works, and master’s research achievements from the 2022-2023 academic year. Ranging from interactive system design to sound design, and from interactive somatosensory games integrated with finger rehabilitation training movements to smart glasses for the elderly, these works reflect the School of Design’s pursuit of multiculturalism and disciplinary diversity, as well as the breadth and depth of students’ exploration into issues such as social welfare, urban well-being, and vulnerable groups.
