Opening and Introduction

On March 13, 2025, invited by Assistant Professor Luo Tao from the School of Design, Teacher WanJiu delivered a lecture focusing on career development and job search strategies in the User Experience (UX) industry. Teacher WanJiu first engaged in enthusiastic interaction with students both online and offline, asking about their views on future career planning, creating a relaxed and lively atmosphere at the venue.

Guest Sharing: A Decade in UX – A Cross-Border Journey from Architecture to Experience Design

Personal Experience

Teacher WanJiu started with his own career trajectory. Graduating with a major in Architecture in 2010, he joined China Southern Power Grid by chance and was exposed to the then-emerging field of "customer experience," thus kicking off his UX career. He reviewed key turning points at different stages: joining a domestic research company in 2013, serving as the head of User Experience Design (UED) at an intelligent cross-border e-commerce enterprise in 2015, and later joining OPPO as an Experience Design Coach in 2018 to promote the development of user experience management.

Industry Insights

Teacher WanJiu pointed out that the scope of UX work is broad, encompassing all user-related business areas. He divided the development of user experience management into five stages, from being "unnoticed" to "experience-driven," and emphasized the importance of experience management to corporate strategy. Combining his practical experience at OPPO, he explained how to improve the quality of product services and guide business decisions through experience management.

Workplace Tips: How to Stand Out in the UX Field

Current Status of Positions

Teacher WanJiu analyzed the current status of UX-related positions, particularly highlighting the importance of user research roles and existing issues such as "overly flashy research methods" and "disconnection from business value." He stressed that UX positions require a diverse set of capabilities, including user insight, data analysis, and project management.

Interview Skills

Regarding interviews, Teacher WanJiu advised students to pay attention to three key aspects: the recruiter’s level of attention to the position, the development stage of the team where the position is located, and the role positioning of the position itself. He shared practical interview tips: highlight key points when writing a resume, fully understand the company’s products before the interview, control the time for self-introduction during the interview, and be good at guiding the interviewer to ask questions.

Interactive Q&A: Addressing Career Development Doubts to Support the Job Search Journey

In the final interactive session of the lecture, students actively raised questions covering topics such as internship opportunities, portfolio preparation, and career transition. Teacher WanJiu answered patiently, encouraging students to maintain a positive attitude, continuously improve their abilities, and be alert to traps in irregular internship recruitment. With humorous and vivid language, he explained complex concepts in a simple way, providing students with valuable career development advice.

Summary

This lecture opened a career door to the UX industry for students. Through the guest’s sharing of personal experience, analysis of industry trends, and practical job search suggestions, students gained a clearer direction for their future career development. It is hoped that students can apply these valuable experiences to their actual job searches, bravely take the first step, and write their own wonderful stories in the field of user experience!
