In May 2024, Assistant Professors JE Seungwoo, Mirna Zordan, Li Xueliang, An Pengcheng, and students from the SUSTech School of Design were invited to attend the 2024 ACM CHI Conference. The conference focused on the latest research findings and technological innovations in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI), providing a platform for in-depth learning and academic exchange.
The ACM CHI Conference (The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems) is a top-tier international academic conference in HCI. It is rated as a Category A conference by the China Computer Federation (CCF), ranked A* (Flagship Conference) by the Core Conference Ranking, and consistently places first in Google Scholar’s overall ranking of HCI journals and conferences. Its academic impact is significant, with an H-5 index of 122 (2024 data).

During the conference, the faculty and students not only presented their research outcomes but also gained in-depth understanding of various new projects and innovative technologies developed by global researchers in HCI. They received valuable guidance and inspiration, which enhanced both their professional skills and international perspectives.
Subsequently, Professor JE Seungwoo and his team continued their journey to Washington D.C. and Boston, where they participated in demonstrations of collaborative projects and visited the MIT Media Lab as well as the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In Washington, the team successfully showcased a product co-developed with a partner company. In Boston, visits to the MIT labs and the RISD student exhibition provided a more comprehensive understanding of industrial design and technological innovation.

Through this transnational academic trip, the participants not only expanded their professional knowledge and skills but were also inspired with innovative ideas and possibilities for international collaboration. The experience is expected to have a long-term impact on the students’ future academic and career development. Many expressed that the trip greatly enriched their academic vision and design thinking.
This activity not only deepened the understanding of practical applications in HCI and industrial design but also provided hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that integrate theory and practice. The School of Design will continue to explore and advance the internationalization and practicality of education, committed to cultivating more design professionals with global perspectives and innovative capabilities.
