On November 9, 2022, Professor LIU Xihui, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Academic) of the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was invited to share her research on "Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Design" with the students and faculty of the DS Lecture Series of SUSTech School of Design (hereinafter referred to as the School). With the topic of "Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Design", LIU shared her research on the transformation of design management capability in manufacturing industry and its impact on China's design policy with the students and faculty of SUSTech.
From the perspectives of the definition of design, innovation design, and advanced manufacturing and innovation design, LIU explained the basic concept of design and the difference between design, innovation and creativity, and introduced the conceptual evolution from industrial design to innovation design, as well as the impact of China's economic paradigm shift on innovation design. Focusing on advanced manufacturing and innovation design, she elaborated on how products, production and business generate continuous interaction through the manufacturing pyramid in the context of Industry 4.0. She pointed out that in the product life cycle of advanced manufacturing, innovation design will play the role of a conductor in the design phase, production phase and utility phase, while promoting the collaborative design among the three phases and thinking about how to utilize social resources for ecosystem design.
Finally, LIU further analyzed how innovation design can be carried out throughout the product life cycle and lead the transformation and upgrading of the traditional manufacturing industry to the advanced manufacturing industry by taking Shang Pin Zhai Pei and SHEIN as examples respectively.
In the discussion session, LIU and the students and teachers had a warm discussion on the recycling link in the production model, whether design maturity becomes a business management tool, design values and other issues.
